‘Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than the people’.
One of the first questions I’m ever asked at a function or social dinner is “what do I do?” or “who do I work for?” It’s a default question to break the ice. Of course, I always politely reply by saying who I work for or what I do. But the truth is, I work for God because it’s he who has given me the gifts and skills to do my work and it’s he that gives me the strength and confidence to face the issues in my work place. It’s all come from God because he created me, not the company I work for. Of course, the company benefits, and I try to be a loyal and hard-working employee because God wants me to behave in that way. And hopefully I benefit as well. As it goes on to say in Colossians 3:24, ‘Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward and that the Master you are serving is Christ’. I pray that one day when I’m asked that question, I can simply reply ‘God’ and then explain why.
Heavenly Father, today, give us the faith to turn to you in our work places. To praise and thank you when things are going well and for strength and wisdom when we’re facing difficulties. For it is you we serve and glorify. Amen.
