Advice from someone who knows.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work

We usually seek advice from people who have been in a similar situation or have knowledge of something that we don’t. But how often so we seek it from God? He’s written an entire book on how to live our lives. The Bible. It’s quite incredible that not many people seek it out given that in some shape or form it can give us direction and advice on everything we face in this life. It may not be the advice or guidance we want to hear but it’s in there. Work, relationships and money. These are the topics in our lives that we spend the most time thinking and worrying about.

  • Money – Ecclesiastes 5:10 ‘Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless’
  • Work – Colossians 3:23 ‘Whatever you do. work heartily. as for the Lord and not for men’
  • Relationships – Proverbs 13:20 ‘He who walks with wise men will be wise. But the company of fools will suffer harm’

There are hundreds of verses on all topics of life. Some find it hard to believe there’s a God because we don’t see evidence that He exists. How do we have a relationship with someone we can’t see? But he does exist through His word. Actually picking up the book and reading it is the biggest hurdle to leap regardless of our faith. The more we read, the closer the relationship we have with Him. And then the decisions on all aspects of our lives become somewhat easier. It’s a self-help book of sorts, but unlike other self-help books we can have an on going conversation with the author through prayer and scripture.

The link below is something I sometimes use when I need help. It’s a bible search engine. Just tap in the subject and various scripture pops up.

Of course, we need faith to do this. It comes with time but I pray that we will all turn to His word. Silly not to turn to someone who knows everything!

Heavenly Father, Your word is a light to our path. Teach us to look to scripture through anyway possible. A book, the internet or even apps! We give thanks that the gift of technology allows us to seek you out in many more ways! – Amen

Today is what we’re aiming for.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,  for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has trouble of its own.

In business we tend to think ahead. Business goals and career goals take up a lot of our time and thinking especially if we’re very ambitious. I’ve begun to stop thinking too far ahead and not worrying too much about the future. But the future does sometimes bring one thing – It’s very common for people to turn to God at an older age. At an age when they start wondering what life was about in the first place and maybe wondering what’s beyond this life. Most of us don’t pay much attention to it while we’re busy, healthy and trying to direct our lives the way we want them to go because we don’t think of our lives as ever really coming to an end. But enough of the old age and life ending stuff. Because life does not end when we are followers of Christ. We get eternal life that will make our life time on this earth feel like less than one second. That is great news! And if we believe that life does not end then we don’t need to worry about the future. We don’t need to spend all our time trying to achieve everything we’re aiming for and cramming it all in thinking that if we don’t we haven’t lived a full and successful life. We can simply enjoy and be at peace with life and be thankful for every day. We will leave this earth the way we entered it. With nothing. Our real reward (eternal life) comes with being believers in Christ. When we tried our best to do His work by spreading His message and bringing others to Him. That’s why this blog exists. If we know and have a relationship with Christ He will make us successful in our lifetime on earth but it will be His idea of success as seen through His eyes, not ours or anybody else’s.

I realize that this can be a very confusing subject. (As demonstrated by what I have written!) If we have questions then I would recommend this book by Nicky Gumbel. He has some answers for us. If you’re curious add it to your christmas list. A good time of year to get some answers!

Ready for battle?

Lyrics to ‘When a Knight won his spurs’

‘When a Knight won his spurs in the stories of old, He was gentle and brave he was gallant and bold. With a shield on his arm and a lance in hand, for God and for valor he rode through the land….No charger have I, and no sword by my side, yet still to adventure and battle I ride. Though back into story land giants have fled. And the Knight s are no more and the dragons are dead. Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed, it’s the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed. And let me set free from the sword of my youth. From the castle of darkness, the power of truth.

Whoa…that’s a bit heavy for a Monday morning! We sang that song at school in England. If you click on the title above you can hear it. It has a lovely tune. The song has stayed with me with all of my life. It pops into my head when I’m about to venture into an environment or situation that I’m not particularly looking forward to. The word’s in bold on the ones that I say to myself. It’s an emotional piece for me because I know that God is with me. Always. I know he is because He’s proved He is over and over. So, as I venture into my next battle, it’s a case of “Here we go again God, the same concerns and worries. Sorry, I can’t stop having them but as long as you’re with me I guess I’ll be okay.”

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed!

Prayer

‘Heavenly Father, Forgive us for ever doubting your presence and help us remember when you’ve been with us and how you’ve helped and protected us. Encourage us to look to you always for strength’ – Amen!

A quote from C.S. Lewis. “Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither”.

Nice one Mr.Lewis. Most of us are just aiming to get to the train station or bus on time but it’s great advice that’s also echoed in 1 Corinthians 9:25

“All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.”

The Second Coming

It would be true to say that when we think of prizes we do think of trophies and medals. Especially in Darien! But there’s another prize worth aiming for. Eternal life with God where there will be eternal joy. Not short-lived joy like getting a new job, receiving a promotion or buying a new house or car. No, we’ll be joyfully singing with the Angels. And yes, you will sing beautifully! I know that if you’re anything like me you find it hard to picture. The artist here tried his hardest but it’s something that’s simply beyond our imaginations as human beings. We just need to have faith!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Teach us to focus on you and not be distracted by earthly temptations that lead us down the wrong path. Help us to be disciplined so we can keep our eye on the prize of spending eternity with you. Amen!
